Photoshop Project

Project 1: Photoshop Postcard

Place: Ludington Michigan
Setting: Cabin/Woods
Issue/Problem: Nature being destroyed by our enjoyment/use of it
Relevance: Destruction of nature, animals habitats being destroyed, littering.
Goal: Bring awareness to the idea of how we use the spaces around us. Get people thinking about how our favorite places to visit are often times destroyed by human occupying it.

Introduction:
For this Project I decided to capture/work with my cabin in Ludington Michigan. I decided to work with this place because I wanted to focus on the memories I have at this cabin and the nature that surrounds it. The problem that I focused on for this assignment was the destroying of nature in order to enjoy it. The question I am contemplated was "Why must we destroy a place of nature in order to enjoy/use it?" I think that this is very relevant to everyone because we all have a favorite place that we like to go and often times it has been destroyed in order for use or has been destroyed by the other people that have gone to enjoy it themselves.

Postcard 1: Repetition
For the first postcard, I introduced concepts of repetition and the idea of beauty that we learned about through Tom Bamberger's work. With this image I chose to repeat the landscape by reflecting it across the y-axis and stretching the landscape. Through this process I also added the small flowers that are repeated multiple times throughout the image to give it more of a beautiful look. With this first post card I also added the camera lens effect in the middle to give the illusion of a sun radiating through the trees. By doing this I felt that it brought the image together and made it look as one. I also enjoyed the idea of have two different paths. Giving the illusion/idea of choosing between two different roads. I also enhanced the colors of the image to make it look brighter and feel warmer.

Postcard 2: Transformation
For the second postcard, I focused on the artist Sandy Skoglund. With this postcard the idea was to focus on transforming the space into something completely different, using secondary colors only. For my colors I chose to stick with the color orange for the fire and then use the color pink for the back ground, as if it were late in the afternoon. I also chose to fill the forest floor with fire to touch on the idea of nature and animals habitats being destroyed by human interaction. In the image you can see part of a cottage/house and you also see the squirrels scurrying up the trees for safety. I used the cloning tool to fill the forest floor with fire. My goal for this postcard was to introduce the idea of humans destroying nature in order to enjoy it and the effects that can have on nature.

Postcard 3: Concealment/Revealing
For the third postcard, I focused on the idea of what to show the viewer/what to hide from he viewer (artist Jenny Holzer Truisms). For this postcard I used an image of a bunch of split logs. Within the logs there are words surrounding the idea of destruction. For this image I chose to focus on how people destroy a place in order to enjoy it. The idea of cutting down trees in order to enjoy a camp fire. With this image I have decided to show the words to the viewer but also conceal them within the logs (as if they have been carved there). I also enhanced the color of the image to make it feel darker and give off the feeling of sadness.

Comments

  1. Your first postcard is super pretty. I love how bright and warm it is. The illusion of two different paths through repetition of the image is successful.

  2. I think the 2nd postcard was very successful in transforming the setting. The exaggeration of all the fire on the ground creates feelings of panic and destruction. Good job conveying your concept of nature being destroyed.

  3. I like the text postcard because it really helps convey your meaning that nature is being destroyed. I like the emotion behind the image too. Finally, I liked how the woods look like they are carved into the wood.

  4. I really enjoy the second postcard, the bird house, flowers, and sun spots makes it look very sweet and magical. The repetition isn't obnoxious and out of place either- it is soft.

  5. The text post card is my favorite. It really shows a unique perspective and shows the mass destruction that we as humans place on the environment.

  6. I think your second postcard does well in conveying the meaning of your project. The very harsh, blunt illustration of nature is done well and the coloration of the background gives if a very dreamlike (or in this case, nightmare like) feeling to the image.

  7. I like your second postcard. I think it is successful in what you were trying to portray. You did a good job on it and I can tell you spent some time on it. You made it believable as well.

  8. I think the idea of your concept is nicely conveyed through your addition and manipulation of objects in the space. Postcard 3 is beautifully jarring with the use of text and the darkness of the composition.

  9. The last postcard really supports your idea in an inventive way. The photo itself is really great and the words give an emotion to each stump.

  10. I think your second postcard is very compelling in regards to supporting your idea about our direct destruction impact on nature. In a way it is very graphic and eye opening, especially with the animals that are being depicted in it. That being said I think your third image is very deep. The image by itself has many things to be said about humans impact on the earth but when you add words to that, it brings it to a whole new level.
