Animation Project

For the Animation Project I would like to create a project around the idea of comedy and nature. I really enjoy things based around fairytales.

Artist Statement

For this animation project Dana and I decided to base our animation around the theme of plants, nature and a fairytale. Our project is about a group of vegetables that witness their neighbors being sprayed by pesticides. The vegetable family sees the negative affects that the pesticides had on their neighbors so they decide to try different things in order to protect themselves from the pesticides. The first idea that the vegetable family tries is blowing soap bubbles. The tomato blows a bubble around the family, but the bubble ends up popping and it can not protect them. The second thing the family tries is an umbrella. The eggplant picks up the umbrella in hopes that it will cover the family. However, again the umbrella idea fails when it can not cover the entire family of plants. The last idea was bubble gum. The butternut squash pulls out a piece of bubble gum and begins blowing a bubble to cover them all. The butternut squash gets the bubble blown up just in time before the human comes to spray them with the pesticides. The bubble from the bubble gum holds up and in the end protects them. The whole garden family cheers and celebrates the win against the pesticides. The main idea behind using the vegetables and the different ways they tried to protect themselves was to show the harm that pesticides can cause. We showed this harm through the destruction of one of the vegetables in the neighboring garden. Since we were using animation for this project we were limited in the way in which we depicted our characters for this story. With that limitation we decided to depict our characters and background setting in a cartoon style. We were also both individually responsible for two specific characters in order to keep the whole animation unified. I created the tomato and butternut squash and Dana created the eggplant and green pepper. We decided on these characters in order to have a complimentary color pallet (red, green, purple, and yellow) to unify the whole animation. The backgrounds were created in photoshop and the rest of the parts were produced in animation. The backgrounds also give off a cartoon feel and compliment the characters that we produced in animation. We decided to place title slides between each of the different ideas that the vegetable family tired in order to give a more constant flow between the ideas. This also allowed for the animation to flow in a more sequential manner. We would have liked to add more sound effects to make the animation more dynamic, but we had many problems with the program allowing us to add other sound effects other than just the background music. However, we did find at the conclusion of the project that we enjoyed the way that the animation came together with the background music. Just having the background music made it feel like an olden day movie.

Reflection:

Our group worked really well together. I felt that we were always on task and accomplished all the things that we wanted to with this project. We also split the work load evenly and accomplished a lot of work. When we struggled with some of the techniques we were able to ask each other questions and work together to complete the task at hand. We are very pleased with how the animation came out.

  2. I really liked your animated. I thought it was really cute. I think you guys did a great job on the animations. You can tell you spent good amount of time on it. You can't tell that multiple people worked on it. The little detail such as the eyes blinking were a nice touch.

  3. The whole project was very creative. The story was unconventional and amusing and the a lot the art work, especially the background environments are really detailed and showed how well you understood the program. This was my favorite so far.

  4. I liked the scene design that you had, they all seemed pretty developed. The animation it self seems simple but it was effective for the style and it all looked like it flowed well together especially when I saw the credit scene and how both of you did different parts. That being said I appreciate how you took the time to animate each veggie individually and even gave them eyelids that blinked!

  5. This was surprisingly really cute. The lack of sound effects made it slightly disenchanting, but the story was simple and interesting. There was a clear problem and solution, so it followed the assignment and did not try to add anything too extra or distracting. I'd give it 4 stars.
